ST. PETERSBURG, Fla, — Cole Irvin pitched into the seventh inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat Tampa Bay 6-3 to take three of four from the Rays. Irvin allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings as the rebuilding A's under new manager Mark Kotsay improved to 4-3. Two of the runs off Irvin were in his final inning. Brandon Lowe homered for the Rays. Oakland scored 31 runs during the series. Dany Jiménez, the third Oakland reliever, worked the ninth for his first big league save.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — No salary arbitration hearing for Bryan Reynolds this year, and that is more than fine with him. The All-Star center fielder has agreed to a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $13.5 million. The contract, announced Thursday, will pay Reynolds $6.75 million per season.

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar (tay-AHS'-kur) Hernández was placed on the 10-day injured list today with a left oblique strain. Hernández was pulled from Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Yankees with left side discomfort, and an MRI revealed the strain. Hernández grounded out to second base in the sixth inning and left the field in pain. The 29-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2021, when he hit .296 with 32 homers, 116 RBIs and an .870 OPS.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Receiver A.J. Green is returning to the Arizona Cardinals on a one-year deal. The seven-time Pro Bowler played in 16 games last season, catching 54 passes for 848 yards and three touchdowns. The 33-year-old is expected to be the team's No. 2 option next to three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins. He joined the Cardinals last season after playing his first 10 seasons with the Bengals.

CLEVELAND (AP)— Cleveland's home opener will be unlike any for the ballclub in more than 100 years. Here come the Guardians. After a name change that still doesn't sit well with some fans, the Guardians will play their first home game at Progressive Field against the San Francisco Giants. It's a new beginning for the ballclub, which dropped Indians — its name since 1915 — last year. Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who cut his acting teeth in Cleveland in the 1970s, will toss a ceremonial first pitch to Larry Doby Jr., whose father broke the American League's color barrier with Cleveland 75 years ago.

DENVER (AP) — When former members of the U.S. snowboarding team sought help reporting sexual-abuse allegations against a longtime coach, they were met with conflicting information that left them unsure of where to turn. A social media post during the Olympics by a former U.S. team member led to allegations that coach Peter Foley had molested them, coerced them into taking naked pictures, crawled into bed with them and nurtured an atmosphere in which women were treated as sex objects. The episode has raised questions as to whether the reporting system for sex-abuse cases in Olympic sports, redesigned in the wake of former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar's abuse of hundreds of athletes, is working the way it should some five years since the overhaul.
