Guardians defeat Oakland, Kopech exits in 1st inning

CLEVELAND — José Ramírez drove in three runs to extend his major league-leading RBI total to 59 and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-3. Ramírez's two-run double in the first gave the Guardians a 2-1 lead. He added an RBI groundout in the seventh. Cal Quantrill gave up one run in six innings for the win. Ramón Laureano, Christian Bethancourt and Seth Brown hit solo homers for Oakland. Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his 11th save as Cleveland took three of four in the series.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech (KOH'-pehk) exited their game against the Texas Rangers with an injury after throwing just 13 pitches in the first inning. Kopech was checked on by the training staff with a full count and two outs against Adolis García. Kopech threw a warmup pitch before spiking the baseball in frustration and walking to the dugout to applause from the fans. Reynaldo López replaced Kopech and struck out García. Chicago has seven players on the injured list.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The New York Mets complete a 10-game California road trip by facing the Los Angeles Angels. Taijuan Walker goes for the Mets, who have gone 4-5 on the trip, against Patrick Sandoval. The Angels have won two of three after a franchise-record 14-game losing streak. Game starts at 7 p.m. eastern time.

SONOMA, Calif. — Defending champion Kyle Larson starts on the pole alongside teammate Chase Elliott in the NASCAR Cup Series' annual trip to Larson's native Northern California. The drivers expect close racing on the shorter version of this hilly road course in wine country. Race starts at 4 p.m. eastern time.

UNDATED (AP) — The two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning face the best in the West Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final beginning Wednesday in Denver. The Lightning are the first team since the 1983-85 Edmonton Oilers to make the final three years in a row and are looking to become the NHL's first three-peat champions since the New York Islanders dynasty that won four consecutive titles from 1980-83.
