Cowart, Bandy lead Bees by Reno with consecutive homers

SALT LAKE CITY — Kaleb Cowart and Jett Bandy smashed back-to-back homeruns as the Salt Lake Bees toppled the Reno Aces 6-4 Saturday night at Smith's Ballpark.

Down 3-1 in the sixth, Efren Navarro started the Bees rally with a double, before Cowart and Bandy's homers boosted Salt Lake to a 4-3 lead. The duo combined to for a couple of insurance runs in the eighth as Cowart doubled and Bandy followed with a single put another run on the board. Josh Rutledge then knocked in Bandy to extend the Bees lead to 6-3. Reno got a run back in the ninth with a solo homerun off the bat off Garrett Weber, but the visitors were unable to close the gap.

Bandy and Cowart combined to go six-for-seven with four RBIs, two homeruns and five runs scored. Rutledge supported the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Alex Yarbrough contributed a double. Salt Lake starter Adam Wilk was chased after four and two-thirds innings, but managed six strike outs and limited the Reno damage to three runs. Kurt Spomer (2-1) earned the win with one and two-thirds shutout innings.

The Bees wrap up the homestand Sunday with one final game against the Aces at 1:05 p.m. The team then hits the road to face Tacoma for a four-game set before returning to Smith's Ballpark on July 24. The Bees will celebrate Pioneer Day with post-game firework shows on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25.
