Many people say to be a reporter you have to have thick skin and for the most part I think there's something to that. Journalists are like doctors, in that, after seeing and talking about blood and violence day after day you do become desensitized. If I internalized all the bad things I read every day, I'd lose it.
There's no doubt that I have developed some detachment from the stories about gang shootings, suicide bombings in Iraq and bank robberies. But since I gave birth to my first child nearly 16 years ago, I have been unable to detach myself from stories that involve children.
The latest heart breaker occurred today when a little boy was killed after he was run over by a school bus. As a mom, it's hard not to imagine how I would feel if that was my child. It's hard not to imagine how devastated his family will be by their loss. I may not feel their pain, but I definitely feel their sadness. I'm going to go home tonight and hold my boys, yes even the 16-year-old, a little tighter.
