PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos (AP) — Authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands have an intercepted a vessel with 114 Haitian migrants as it passed through the chain southeast of the Bahamas.
The government says the 94 male and 20 female migrants are being detained and will be sent back to Haiti. A statement Monday from the government says the boat was identified by coastal radar station and intercepted in the Caicos Bank south of the main island of Providenciales.
The British territory is between Haiti and the Bahamas and has long been both a destination and a smuggling route for Haitian migrants.
Authorities there and throughout the region have sought to dissuade migrants from the often-perilous voyages. At least 17 migrants died on Dec. 25 when their vessel overturned just off Providenciales.
