UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says the situation in Ukraine is as "dangerous as it is destabilizing." The Security Council has met at Ukraine's request but action is unlikely since Russia has veto power. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold talks with Kiev. And Canada says it is pulling its ambassador out of Moscow over Russia's military intervention.
KUNMING, China (AP) — State media report a terrorist assault in southern China killed 29 people who were slashed to death by attackers dressed in black. Media report four attackers were also killed and several others are being sought. The official Xinhua (shin-wah) News Agency says the attackers were separatists. Part of the region is home to a simmering rebellion by some members of the Muslim Uighur (WEE'-gur) population.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Violent student-led protests in Venezuela will be a focus of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week. He's scheduled to meet Monday in Geneva with Venezuela's foreign minister, who also will speak to the U.N. Human Rights Council. The U.N. human rights chief called Friday for the Venezuelan government to respect peaceful assemblies and expressed concern about the use of excessive force against protesters.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Evacuation orders remain in effect for hundreds of homes in Los Angeles County foothill communities where bands of rain falling on hillsides stripped by wildfires threaten major mudslides. The storm marked a sharp departure from many months of drought, but even the latest rain isn't enough to end the drought. The storm is expected to taper off as it moves east.
FALLON, Nev. (AP) — The Navy says helicopters and ground crews were having difficulty reaching the area where a fighter jet has crashed during a training exercise in western Nevada. It's a remote location with mountainous terrain. The pilot's condition is not immediately known.
