Russia accused of invading Ukraine...California lashed by rain...Roman sarcophagus seized

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine is accusing Russia of invading its territory. The country's U.N. ambassador has told the Security Council that armed men identifying themselves as Russians have taken control of two airports in Crimea and captured the main air traffic control center there. Moscow has kept mostly silent, but President Barack Obama has warned Moscow "there will be costs" if it intervenes militarily.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Forecasters expect the massive Pacific storm that's lashing California to bring rain to the state through Saturday, before moving east into similarly rain-starved states. The storm's first waves have been drenching foothill communities east of Los Angeles that just weeks ago were menaced by a wildfire. Now, they are facing possible mudslides. Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for about 1,200 homes.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's president has proposed the rival Koreas hold regular reunions of families of divided by the Korean War, saying timing is running out for those who are growing elderly. The two Koreas last month held their first reunions in more than three years. Analysts say North Korea is worried that more frequent reunions could open the country to influence from more affluent South Korea.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles airport police chief says the facility's communications system has been fixed after what he termed a glitch prevented a faster response to a gunman last fall. The Associated Press reported Thursday that when the shooting started, a screening supervisor picked up an emergency phone but no location automatically was transmitted to a dispatcher. The supervisor fled without providing the information because the gunman was near.

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal officials have seized an ancient Roman sarcophagus lid from a New York City storage facility. Italian officials say it was looted from Italy decades ago. A marble statue of a reclining half-clad female is carved in the lid of the funeral box. The statue appeared at a public exhibition in New York as recently as last week.
