YALAMBOJOCH, Guatemala (AP) — A remote Guatemalan village is mourning the loss of Felipe Gomez Alonzo, an 8-year-old boy who on Christmas Eve became the second Guatemalan migrant child to die in U.S. custody. Grieving family members in the impoverished hamlet of Yalambojoch say they have no TV or radio, and had no idea that the trek north could be dangerous or even deadly. They say in recent years practically "everyone" has begun to emigrate.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's signature campaign pledge to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border may not be as clearcut as it once sounded. Outgoing White House chief of staff John Kelly told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Sunday that Trump abandoned the notion of "a solid concrete wall early on in the administration." White House counselor Kellyanne Conway calls discussion of the apparent contradiction "a silly semantic argument."
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has ordered a slowdown to the withdrawal of U.S. forces in Syria. That from Sen. Lindsay Graham. The South Carolina Republican described the slowdown as "a pause situation" and said, "I think we're slowing things down in a smart way." He had lunch Sunday with Trump. Graham had criticized Trump's announced withdrawal of about 2,000 troops from war-torn Syria. Trump had declared victory over the Islamic State group in Syria, though pockets of fighting remain.
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Official results say Bangladesh's ruling alliance overwhelmingly won Sunday's election, allowing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to govern for a third straight term. But the opposition disputes the outcome, 16 deaths in political violence were reported, and some voters alleged intimidation in the voting booths. The ruling alliance won 288 out of 300 seats, allowing it to form the next government. Hasina's rule has been described as increasingly authoritarian.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge in Texas has cleared the way for an appeal of his recent ruling that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. That means "Obamacare" stays in effect while the litigation continues. In a ruling issued Sunday, Judge Reed O'Connor in Fort Worth wrote that he stands by his earlier conclusion. However, because many everyday Americans would face great uncertainty if that ruling were immediately put into effect, O'Connor issued a stay to allow for appeals.
