KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congo's army says it has killed the commander of the Rwandan Hutu militia group FDLR for whom the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant.
Army spokesman Gen. Richard Kasonga said Wednesday that Gen. Sylvestre Mudacumura was gunned down overnight in Rutshuru territory in North Kivu province.
Kasonga told the United Nations-backed Radio Okapi that Mudacumura, commander of the Democratic Forces of the Liberation of Rwanda, had carried out and ordered some of the worst kinds of violence against the Congolese people, including rape.
Kasonga appealed to other rebel groups in eastern Congo to surrender or face the same fate as Mudacumura.
The rebel leader had been under U.N. sanctions since 2005. The ICC arrest warrant was issued in 2012.
