At least 12 dead in Baghdad bombing

BAGHDAD (AP) — Authorities in Iraq say at least 12 people are dead after a suicide car bomb ripped through an outdoor market in Baghdad.

Five more people died in bombings today elsewhere in Iraq.

The attack in Baghdad took place as government forces deployed across much of the Iraqi capital in advance of a major military parade later this week.

The developments came on the heels of two large-scale attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that killed more than 300 people last week. Yesterday, visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Washington will send 560 more troops to Iraq to help battle the militant group.
