5 ex-Honduran police to face drug trafficking charges in US

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The U.S. ambassador in Honduras says five former Honduran police officers have turned themselves over to U.S. authorities to face drug-trafficking charges.

Ambassador James Nealon said on his official Twitter account Monday that the voluntary surrender was "another blow to impunity in Honduras."

The five officers are among six indicted last month by a federal grand jury in New York on charges of conspiring with the son of a former Honduran president to smuggle drugs into the U.S. They allegedly agreed from 2004 to 2014 to ensure safe passage of tons of cocaine through Honduras.

The case involves Fabio Porfirio Lobo, the son of former President Porfirio Lobo Sosa. He pleaded guilty in May to conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S. He was arrested in Haiti in May 2015.
