CEDAR CITY — A lightning strike is responsible for a new wildfire that sparked west of Cedar City Friday in the area of Comstock Road and Desert Mound, police said.

Multiple fire crews and law enforcement personnel have responded to one of the fires, dubbed the Mount Fire, and no structures are threatened, Utah Fire Info said.

"The fire is currently moving north up the ridgeline, and air tanker and firefighting aircraft are on scene assisting with suppression efforts," the Iron County Sheriff's Office said.

The fire is burning on mostly BLM land but threatening private land nearby, fire officials said on the Utah Fire Info page.

"This is currently the largest recent incident caused by lightning in the area. There have been numerous other reported lightning caused wildfires," fire officials added.
