WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — West Valley City is appealing a city commission's decision to reverse the demotion of a police lieutenant who led a now-disbanded drug unit.
The city says in a statement Wednesday that it stands by its decision to demote John Coyle and that accountability is important for restoring trust.
Coyle's attorney, Blake Hamilton, did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
Earlier this month, the West Valley City Civil Service Commission ruled Coyle was unfairly demoted and ordered the city to award him back pay.
City administrators had held Coyle responsible for the drug unit's failure to book evidence or account for some drugs and money.
The problems led prosecutors to drop 126 drug cases involving the unit.
