RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 28-year-old Washoe County sheriff's deputy has been arrested on one count of suspicion of having voluntary sexual contact with a female inmate after an investigation that lasted more than six months.
Reno police officer Tim Broadway says Deputy Stuart Balch turned himself in at the Washoe County Jail on Monday. He'd been assigned to the sheriff's detention unit.
Washoe County Sheriff Michael Haley says he placed Balch on paid administrative leave and turned the investigation over to Reno police as soon as his office was made aware of the allegations in April.
Haley said he suspended Blach without pay on Monday and intends to discharge him once the union contract's requirements are satisfied.
Balch's initial court appearance hasn't been set, and it's not clear if he has a lawyer.
