LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 12-year-old Las Vegas boy who was shot in the head has died a year after his mother was arrested and accused of trying to kill him in what she told police she planned as a murder-suicide.

Israel Carrillo died Thursday at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas from complications of the head wound he received early May 26, 2014, the Clark County coroner reported Tuesday. The boy's death was ruled a homicide.

Criminal charges may be changed to murder in coming days against the boy's mother, Shavon Jacklein Carrillo, prosecutor Brad Turner said. Defense attorney Dan Bunin declined immediate comment.

Carrillo, 32, also uses the name Shavon Aguilar.

She has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and child abuse charges, and is being held at the Clark County jail on $750,000 bail with trial scheduled Aug. 31.

Police say two young girls were also in the small bedroom when Shavon Carrillo allegedly shot her son.

Carrillo told investigators she was upset about the breakup of her 12-year marriage and wanted to kill herself and the three children, according to a police report. Carrillo and the children had moved in with her sister at a home in northwest Las Vegas where the shooting occurred.

Police said Carrillo told investigators that she fetched a .22-caliber rifle, lay next to her son on a sleeping bag and told him she loved him as she shot him. Police said her brother-in-law heard the first shot and grabbed the rifle from her before more shots were fired.

Carrillo later told police she used methamphetamine and thought she and her son would be together if they died together
