SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of a woman who is suing a polygamous trust, saying she was forced to marry her 21-year-old cousin years ago at age 14.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1wnCEEL ) the court agreed Tuesday to hear the case. The woman is seeking up to $40 million in the suit naming the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its imprisoned leader Warren Jeffs. It also targets a state-run trust overseeing land and property in Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.
The trust is fighting the lawsuit, saying it could force residents out of their homes and contending that the trust shouldn't be liable for what Jeffs did.
A District Court judge earlier refused to dismiss the trust.
Arguments have not been scheduled.
