SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and local officials have officially signed a wide-ranging blueprint for the future of the Wasatch Mountain range.
The Daily Herald of Provo reports (http://bit.ly/1M7GtHP ) Herbert and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams were among those participating in the ceremonial signing of the Mountain Accord agreement, which was finalized in July.
Under the agreement, ski resorts agreed to leave untouched some 2,000 acres of backcountry in exchange for U.S. Forest Service land near their bases.
Resorts, conservationists and local officials say the deal balances sky industry development and preservation of mountain and canyon areas.
The agreement removes a proposed swap that would have given Snowbird access to land in Utah County's American Fork Canyon. Residents weren't part of the planning process and opposed the idea.
