UNC designated as lead school for Homeland Security grant

WASHINGTON (AP) — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a $3 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security to be the lead institution for a center that will address the challenges of coastal hazards.

The department's Science and Technology Directorate announced the grant on Thursday. The grant covers the first operating year.

A statement says the DHS Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence will bring together university students and professors, DHS and other federal agencies, among others, to address the challenges facing communities across the U.S. that are vulnerable to coastal hazards, including hurricanes and flooding.

The Center of Excellence program was established by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to assemble leading faculty and graduate students to focus their talents on diverse homeland security challenges.
