URBANA, Ill. (AP) — The University of Illinois plans to use money left over from a construction project to help build a new African-American cultural center.
According to The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/22YdpZY ), members of the Board of Trustees Audit, Budget, Finance and Facilities Committee learned about the plan Monday. The full board would still have to approve the project.
In all, $15 million was left from an $83 million bond issue that financed the construction of Wassaja Hall and demolition of some older student housing.
School officials said the leftover money would be used for the planned Bruce Nesbitt African-American Cultural Center. The campus has already promised $4.9 million for the project.
The unused money would also be used to finance some smaller campus housing projects.
