NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Officials say a man accused of abducting a 14-year-old Baxter girl had visited two Newton schools.
David A. Lavera of San Diego, Calif., is charged with enticing a minor, carrying weapons and a failure to have a valid driver's license.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office says it received a report of a kidnapping shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. A caller identified as a relative of the girl told police that a man took her after saying he was an actor in the "Twilight" series.
The girl's friends and relatives spotted the vehicle in Baxter and told the driver to stop.
Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Michael Motsinger says a student had asked a teacher to let Lavera speak in the school district, and he visited two schools.
