Pawtucket school district to get AmeriCorps funding

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Serve Rhode Island and the Pawtucket School District have been awarded nearly $220,000 from the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps to provide graduating seniors with career counseling.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Wednesday that the funding would support AmeriCorps members at Tolman High School and Shea High School in Pawtucket. The $219,680 grant is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Reed says a local match in education awards would bring the funding to $570,000.

Sixteen AmeriCorps members will work with Pawtucket juniors and seniors to connect them to post-secondary opportunities. The Connecting Futures Operation AmeriCorps program aims to help more than 900 graduating seniors find a career.

Reed, a member of the appropriations subcommittee that oversees AmeriCorps funding, says the grant will create new opportunities for students.
