Okla. House passes school sports oversight measure

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma House has passed legislation supporters say will bring more accountability and transparency to an organization that oversees thousands of high school athletes and participants in other extracurricular activities.

The House voted 59-30 for the Senate-passed bill and sent it to Gov. Mary Fallin to be signed into law.

The bill by Rep. Bobby Cleveland of Norman targets the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association, which oversees extracurricular activities for public schools for grades seven through 12. The bill says no school can join an athletic association unless it complies with the Open Records and Open Meeting laws. The bill also requires the organization to receive a public performance audit.

The OSSAA has been the subject of numerous complaints lodged by coaches and parents.
