NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A veteran Newtown police officer placed on administrative leave after a collision has retired.
The News-Times reported (http://bit.ly/1kfNwQj ) that Lt. George Sinko, the 49-year-old public information officer, retired last week while on paid administrative leave. He had been reprimanded for his delayed response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012.
When officers rushed to the school, Sinko was working a side job, directing traffic. He arrived about two hours later. Police Chief Michael Kehoe said he was satisfied with how Sinko performed when he arrived.
Sinko, a 25-year officer, does not have a listed phone number and could not be reached for comment.
A police report said Sinko was driving a department SUV when he crashed into a pillar, causing about $2,000 of damage to the vehicle.
