New president named for Columbus State University

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia Board of Regents officials say a new president has been chosen to lead Columbus State University.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday that Chris Markwood, vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been named CSU president. Officials say his term will begin on June 1.

CSU's former president Tim Mescon stepped down from his position Dec. 31. Columbus State's Vice President for Academic Affairs Tom Hackett had been serving as interim president during the search.

Officials say Markwood has worked at Texas A&M in Corpus Christi since 2011. Officials say he earned bachelor of science degrees in political science and history from Southwest Baptist University, and a master's and PhD. In political science from the University of Missouri.
