SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Navajo Nation man accused of murder is headed to trial in May after years of procedural battles over his charges.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/19T1CVa) that 28-year-old Philbert Rentz is facing charges related to a 2011 shooting during an argument at a Navajo Nation housing complex in San Juan County, Utah.
Rentz is accused of firing a shot that passed through one man's body and into the heart of another, killing him.
Rentz's attorneys started a series of appeals after he was indicted on two counts of using a firearm to commit a violent crime, arguing that it was double jeopardy.
On Wednesday, Rentz received a new indictment that included only one of the charges in question.
An attorney representing Rentz said the man was acting in self-defense.
