UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A man who fatally shot a firefighter he mistook for an intruder has been indicted on six charges related to illegal possession of firearms.
Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks announced the indictment Thursday at a news conference. She said the grand jury declined to indict Darrell Lumpkin on murder charges.
Lumpkin fatally shot John Ulmschneider on April 15. Firefighters had been called to Lumpkin's home to check on his welfare. When he was unresponsive, they forced their way in. At that point, Lumpkin fired several rounds. A second firefighter, Kevin Swain, was injured in the shooting.
Alsobrooks said a previous conviction for a violent crime disqualified Lumpkin from owning weapons.
