HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Wednesday called on the Connecticut Teachers' Retirement Board to explain why some beneficiaries have not received pension funds they're owed.

In a letter sent to the board's administrator, Darlene Perez, Malloy said state auditors' recent findings about delayed payments and the inability to contact beneficiaries are both "serious and disturbing" and that he wants a comprehensive report on the matter by the end of the month.

The auditors informed Malloy last week that the retirement board failed to notify certain designated beneficiaries they were owed pension benefits from a deceased member's account. In one case, no attempts had been made as of April to contact the beneficiary of approximately $192,000 in accumulated contributions for one plan member who died in 2009.

"More disturbingly, while the auditors cited one particularly egregious violation, they also noted that they cannot determine the true number or extent of all instances in which beneficiaries have not been paid as required," Malloy said, adding that the auditors have opened "the question of whether other errors and procedural deficiencies have been made."

Perez has said she doesn't believe the problem is extensive.
