OAKLAND, Maine (AP) — A Maine school district is trying an alternative method of keeping athletic fields green in an effort to reduce chemical use and save money.
Regional School District 18 is testing out a method called "overseeding" on three fields in the Oakland-area district. Overseeding is spreading grass seed over a lawn to help eliminate weeds and bare spots, which can cause injuries.
Staff at the schools repurposed a fertilizer spreader to spread grass seed as part of the project.
Maine's Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says the school district's project is designed to test the effectiveness of overseeding as an affordable way to improve the safety of sports fields. The department says the study will be completed next year and it is showing promise thus far.
