LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified school board has voted to back state legislation that eliminates parent choice when it comes to vaccinations.
The Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1b2V3kc ) the unanimous vote Tuesday supports Senate Bill 277, which would require that public school children receive vaccinations unless they have a note from a doctor. Current law allows parents to decide.
Board member Tamar Galatzan, who co-sponsored the resolution, says there have been about 90 cases of whooping cough and one case of measles this year. More and more parents, she said, are refusing to vaccinate their kids.
About 300 members from a local parenting group called Ladies with Babies attended the meeting in a show of opposition to the resolution.
The bill is scheduled for a hearing in the state Senate's education committee on Wednesday.
