Interim president chosen for Wittenberg University in Ohio

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Wittenberg University in western Ohio has appointed an interim president who formerly served as president of a university in Indiana.

The Springfield News-Sun (http://bit.ly/1MSyZTY ) reports that Dick Helton will begin serving as interim president at Wittenberg on Jan. 11. He is expected to remain in that position for at least a year to 18 months while Wittenberg officials search for their next president.

Helton was president of Vincennes University in Indiana from 2004 to 2015.

Former Wittenberg President Laurie Joyner resigned in November shortly after announcing $6.5 million in cuts at the university. Those cuts included elimination of retiree health benefits, cuts to employee health benefits and a review of academic programs that could lead to job cuts.

Wittenberg is a private Lutheran university with about 1,900 students.
