SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Senate has approved legislation that would require students who suffer a concussion to get a doctor or trainer's permission to return to sports or class.
The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports (http://bit.ly/1EVB4AX) that the state Senate endorsed the measure Thursday. It now heads to the Illinois House. The bill would have all Illinois schools create a concussion oversight team to decide local policy based on area availability.
Republican state Sen. Dale Righter of Mattoon says a specific statewide mandate would be better.
But Democratic state Sen. Kwame Raoul of Chicago say over exercise can exacerbate concussions.
The Illinois High School Association, which runs prep sports in the state, backs the legislation.
