GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Transportation officials have re-opened Interstate 29 from Grand Forks to the Canadian border after it was temporarily closed due to smoke from grass fires.
Vehicles are now moving in both directions, but officials have issued a travel alert warning motorists of the potential for reduced visibilities as fires could ignite and cause smoke.
The National Weather Service says dangerous fire weather is in store for much of the northern Plains over the next several days, with gusty winds and low humidity levels.
A blaze south of Bismarck led some homes to be evacuated earlier this week and prompted classes to be canceled at the University of Mary. However, the evacuation order has been lifted and classes resumed Wednesday.
A statewide fire emergency is in effect until the end of April.
