PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Health officials have confirmed that an unvaccinated 6-year-old in St. Lucie County has measles.
The Palm Beach Post (http://pbpo.st/1HwJmhV ) reports the Florida Department of Health is working with the St. Lucie County School District to inform parents about the highly contagious disease. It can be spread to unvaccinated people through the air.
Symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms include a blotchy rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes and tiny white spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth.
Doctors recommend that children get measles immunizations between 12 and 15 months and again at 4 to 6 years.
