FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — A garbage hauling truck with its rear lifting mechanism raised has struck a Connecticut highway overpass and flipped over, killing the driver.

Authorities say driver John Collett unloaded a garbage container at a rest area Thursday and went onto Interstate 95 northbound with the truck's lift mechanism still elevated.

State police troopers say the lift struck an overpass near Exit 23, causing the truck to flip on its side and slide into a guardrail. Officials say the guardrail penetrated the truck's cab and caused Collett's fatal injuries.

The 32-year-old Collett later died at a hospital in nearby Bridgeport. He was from Wallingford.

Fairfield and state police are investigating the accident. State Department of Transportation officials are assessing damage to the overpass.
