SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An ex-Utah band teacher who prosecutors say pretended to be working on a male sexuality study in an attempt to lure a teen student will spend up to 15 years in prison.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2aiFKmC) that 54-year-old Derek Spitzer was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of online solicitation of a minor.
Spitzer says he couldn't feel worse about what happened. His lawyer asked for a jail sentence, but the judge decided the crime was too serious and sent him to prison for at least a year and up to 15 years.
Prosecutors say Spitzer asked the teen to participate in what he called a research project with the Kinsey Institute of Male Sexuality in October 2015.
Charges say the student reported the teacher's behavior when he began seeking sexual contact.
