PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona has a new state veterinarian.
State Department of Agriculture officials announced Monday that Dr. Peter Mundschenk has been appointed to the position.
Mundschenk has been the acting state veterinarian since Dr. Perry Durham left the department last year.
Since joining the department last year, Mundschenk created an Arizona program to protect the public and industry from avian influenza.
Part of the program includes staffing and funding for an outreach program to educate people with backyard chickens, ducks, geese and exotic birds about the risk of catching diseases that affect people and animals.
Mundschenk will be responsible for the prevention and tracking of animal diseases.
His position also provides veterinary oversight to the program that inspects meat and poultry operations.
