EDINBURGH, Ind. (AP) — A teenager was missing and two others were in critical condition Friday after a swimming outing turned tragic in southern Indiana.
The accident happened when a teenage girl was swept over the Edinburgh dam at the Big Blue River and became trapped, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a written statement. Four other teens who were swimming with her then attempted to rescue the girl but were overcome by the force of the water, which was at flood stage.
Seventeen-year-old Jason Moran was still missing Friday night and the search for him was suspended until Saturday morning, the agency said.
"We don't know if he's still in there or if he got carried downstream," Conservation Officer Jet Quillen said. "We're holding out hope that we'll find him alive, but at this point we're in recovery mode."
Two other teens — Sarah Mclevish and Michael Chadbourne, both 16 — were in critical condition at IU Methodist in Indianapolis. According to the DNR, it was Mclevish who became trapped when the others tried to rescue her. The DNR said passersby pulled Mclevish and Chadbourne from the water and administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took them to a hospital.
Seventeen-year-old Trent Crabb and 18-year-old Mark Nally were able to swim back to shore on their own, the DNR said.
The teenagers were all from Franklin, which is about 15 miles north of Edinburgh.
