HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Legislation that intends to improve services offered at Connecticut's public colleges and universities for veterans has cleared the state Senate.
Currently, each school has a veterans' lounge known as an OASIS, which stands for Operation Academic Support for Incoming Service Members. Lawmakers said these centers where veterans gather to study, relax, talk and gather information about veterans' benefits can vary greatly, school by school.
Sen. Mae Flexer, co-chairman of the legislature's veterans committee, said all the state's 6,000 student veterans should have access to the same high level of services available on many campuses.
The bill requires the Board of Regents for Higher Education and UConn to evaluate and assess the different centers and identify success programming.
The legislation passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday and now awaits House action.
