A California woman died after taking part in a radio station-sponsored water-drinking contest to win a Nintendo Wii video game system, news reports said Monday.
Mother-of-three Jennifer Strange, 28, died on Friday after consuming more than a half gallon (two liters) of water in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest organised by KDND 107.9 radio in Sacramento, northern California.
Sacramento coroner's office officials told local media initial tests showed that Strange's death was "consistent with water intoxication." Messages left with the coroner's office by AFP were not returned Monday.
Under the contest's rules, participants were given eight fluid ounce (225 mililiter) bottles of water to drink at 15-minute intervals. The competitor drinking the most water without urinating was to be declared the winner.
Reports said Strange had complained to work colleagues of a sore head hours after participating in the contest and went home early. She was later found dead at her home.
Water intoxication can occur when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is altered by a rapid intake of water. This can cause brain swelling, seizures, coma or death
John Geary, vice president for Entercom Sacramento, the radio station's owner, said personnel had been stunned by the death.
"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.
