Man dies in construction accident near Cedar City

CEDAR CITY — One man died Tuesday morning after an accident at a construction site near Cedar City.

The Iron County Sheriff's Office said officers were dispatched to an accident at Sonrise Christian Church, just west of Cedar City, at approximately 10:20 a.m. As officers arrived at the scene, they found a 24-year-old man dead after being struck and pinned by a dump truck, according to the sheriff's office.

Officers said a preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was "bent down greasing the bucket of an excavator" when a dump truck, driven by another construction worker, backed into him.

Initially, Life Flight had been dispatched, but was called off after officers realized the man had died at the scene.

At this time, the sheriff's office is calling the incident a "tragic accident," and no charges have been filed.

Authorities have not identified the man.
