By the time January settles over the Wasatch Front, most Utahns know the routine. Gray skies, cold mornings and snow in the mountains. For anyone ready for a break that feels different from home, without a long or complicated trip, there's a small Western town in Arizona worth a closer look: Wickenburg.

The Town of Wickenburg sits about 60 miles northwest of Phoenix, where the Sonoran Desert meets the foothills. It enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. From Salt Lake City, it's a short nonstop flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor, then roughly an hour's drive. Southern Utah travelers can even make it a road trip.

What you'll find when you arrive is a town that still feels like the Old West. It just happens to have championship golf, historic guest ranches and a nationally recognized Western art museum along with it.

Championship golf with mountain views

For Utah golfers whose clubs go into storage each fall, Wickenburg is an easy way to keep playing. The town is home to three golf clubs, each with its own character. Wickenburg Golf Club is the town's original 18-hole championship course, established in 1949, with views of the Bradshaw Mountains.

After your round, the Hitching Post restaurant is a relaxed spot to settle in. Los Caballeros Golf Club sits on the grounds of Rancho de los Caballeros, one of Wickenburg's historic guest ranches. It's a traditional championship layout with a 135 slope rating, so bring your best game.

Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club, a private club, rounds out the lineup with its 18-hole Big Wick course and the 9-hole Li'l Wick, where music plays around the course.

Stay at a real Western guest ranch

Wickenburg is known as the dude ranch capital of Arizona, and its guest ranches are a big reason people return year after year.

The Flying E is a working cattle ranch. Kay El Bar centers on a historic adobe lodge. Rancho Casitas offers casitas for short and longer stays. Rancho de los Caballeros pairs 20,000 acres of desert with a spa, its own golf course and evening bonfires.

Days at a guest ranch can be as full or as quiet as you like. Ride horses through the desert in the morning. Spend the afternoon by the pool. End the night around a campfire under a clear sky. It works for families, couples and anyone who simply wants to unplug. Most ranches operate in the cooler months, from about October through May, which lines up well with a Utah winter.

Western art and real frontier history

Wickenburg's story began with a gold strike in 1863. You can still trace it through town. The Sigler Western Museum houses more than 400 works of Western art, including sculptures by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. It also features a turn-of-the-century Wickenburg street scene and a hands-on "Out on the Ranch" exhibit for kids.

Just a few steps away, Frontier Street is lined with early-1900s buildings and the restored 1895 Santa Fe Depot, now home to the Visitor Center. Pick up the self-guided walking tour to find six bronze statues of the town's colorful characters. Don't miss the Jail Tree, a mesquite more than 200 years old that once served as the town jail.

A short drive out of town, Vulture City Ghost Town preserves the mining camp near Henry Wickenburg's original gold mine. Back in town, the 1948 Saguaro Theater still shows classic Westerns.

Desert trails and wide-open space

Utahns know a good trail, and the desert around Wickenburg offers a different kind of scenery than what's back home.

The Hassayampa River Preserve has easy loop trails past a palm-shaded pond and along a rare desert river, where more than 280 bird species have been recorded. For a bigger climb, Vulture Peak rises to 3,660 feet; finishers can pick up a completion certificate from the Chamber of Commerce. Local outfitters and guest ranches offer guided hikes, trail rides and Jeep tours.

And from November through April, Wickenburg lives up to its title as the Team Roping Capital of the World, with roping events at arenas around town.

Plan your Wickenburg getaway

What stands out most about Wickenburg isn't any single attraction. It's how easy everything feels. The town is compact, the drives are short, and there are no long lines or packed schedules. You can tee off in the morning, ride in the afternoon and walk to dinner in the evening.

Whether you're planning a long weekend, a family trip over winter break or a couple's escape, Wickenburg gives you sunshine, space and the pace of a real Western town. Discover golf, guest ranches, museums and hiking at OutWickenburgWay.com.
