SALT LAKE CITY — It didn't take long for Utah to extend its FBS leading streak for another season on Saturday.
Utah defensive back Jackson Bennee jumped a route and picked off Cal Poly quarterback Ty Dieffenbach en route to a pick-six score as one of nine touchdowns scored by the Utes against the visiting FCS program. The defensive score extended Utah's pick-six record to 22 consecutive seasons.
It also helped Utah to a 2-0 start to the season and an upward move in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings that were released Sunday afternoon. The Utes, who were previously ranked No. 25 last week, moved up to No. 20 as one of three Big 12 teams ranked.
The Utes are joined in the rankings from the Big 12 this week by No. 14 Iowa State, who is 3-0 after a rivalry win over Iowa last weekend, and No. 21 Texas Tech. An additional four teams from the conference, including BYU, received votes.
BYU, who was previously unofficially ranked at No. 26 for the last two weeks as the top team receiving votes, dropped one spot to No. 27 despite a 2-0 start and a 27-3 defensive win over Stanford on Saturday.
A week after scoring 69 points against FCS Portland State, BYU's offense had a little more trouble getting into the end zone this week but were undoubtedly the better team on the field Saturday night.
The Cougars defense has yet to allow a team to score a touchdown this season, though the road will only get more difficult as the schedule gets more difficult.
Reigning Big 12 champion Arizona State dropped out of the rankings following a narrow loss to Mississippi State in a walk-off touchdown. The Sun Devils were previously ranked No. 12 last week and fall all the way out.
At the top of the rankings remains Ohio State, followed by Penn State, LSU, Oregon and Miami. Following a 69-3 win over Oklahoma State, Oregon jumped into the top five after previously being ranked No. 6.
One of the biggest upward moves was South Florida, who went from unranked to No. 18 after an 18-16 win over Florida.
