ST. GEORGE — A former Iron County sheriff's lieutenant accused of abusing and harassing his subordinates will not face state prosecution due to the statute of limitations expiring on the alleged offenses.

In a formal statement issued by the Iron County Attorney's Office, Chad Dotson said independent prosecutor Scott Burns determined that the state could not move forward with charges against former Lt. Jeff Humphries.

Dotson explained that Utah law imposes specific time limits for prosecuting certain offenses, and in this case, those limits had expired.

"We extend our sincere gratitude to Piute County Attorney Scott Burns, a veteran prosecutor with many years of experience handling violent crime, for his assistance in this case," Dotson said. "His professionalism and support to the Iron County Attorney's Office is deeply appreciated."
