SANDY — Several businesses were forced to evacuate due to a chemical fire at a supply store in Sandy on Friday afternoon.
The blaze began just before 1 p.m. at Superior Buck and Steel Supply, 8685 S. 700 West, according to Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Ryan McConaghie. Smoke from the fire was seen by drivers on I-15.
The fire is in a field near the store and is not threatening any buildings, but nearby businesses were evacuated because the fire involves flammable paraffin wax hydrocarbons which can cause dangerous fumes.
The nearby businesses of Gerber Collision and Glass, and CreditStreetSolutions were cleared out.
The bumpers of some cars were melted, he said.
Firefighters are working to contain the fire, which McConaghie said has been "stubborn" in areas. He expects the crews will continue working for another hour or two to fully contain the blaze.
Investigators are unsure of how the fire started.
