As summer is coming to an end, you might find yourself thinking back on the warm days in the park, the sun on your skin at the pool or even just sitting on your porch in the mornings. If you weren't wearing sunscreen for any of those activities, there's a good chance that your skin took some direct damage from the sun.
Yale Medicine refers to skin damage as photoaging or photodamage. Essentially, ultraviolet rays damage the skin over time as it's exposed to sunlight or tanning lights. According to Yale Medicine, some of these signs could include:
- Wrinkles
- Age spots
- Liver spots
- Freckles
- Loss of skin tone
- Rough texture
- Spider veins
- Redness and blotchiness
You might think that once the freckles show up or the tan fades there's nothing you can do to reverse the damage. While it's true that you can't turn back the clock, there is a treatment you can do to reduce signs of sun damage.
Moxi
Trilogy Medical Center offers Moxi — a fractional, gentle laser resurfacing treatment. According to the Moxi website, the wavelength the device uses "targets water within cells to work with the body's natural healing processes."
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says nonablative, fractional lasers allow the skin to recover much faster while also reducing complications.
These treatments are especially helpful for younger people who don't have decades of skin and sun damage to treat, as the laser works best on superficial sun damage. It's also a good option for newer signs of aging or delaying the onset of aging lines.
Many people have also found relief from acne breakouts after using Moxi, as it can help dry the blemishes out and rejuvenate the skin.

What to expect
When you come to Trilogy for a Moxi treatment, you can expect a quick, positive experience from the moment you walk in the door.
Your esthetician will take you back into one of the treatment rooms to talk about your goals and treatment options after a skin analysis. If you both decide Moxi is a good fit for you, you'll discuss areas you'd like to focus on.
It's a good treatment option for the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs, as it can be used on all types of skin, anywhere on the body. If you're concerned about sunspots on your arms and hands, that might be the place to start. Rough skin, uneven tones, and pigmentation int he skin leads most clients to start with the face treatment.
Your aesthetician will apply a topical anesthetic to the area being treated so you won't feel discomfort or pain. You may still feel some warming sensations even with the numbing cream, but that means the laser is doing its job.
The average face treatment time (after numbing) takes only about 15-20 minutes, so it's something you could squeeze in on your lunch break.
If you're starting with your face for treatments, don't worry there is little to no down time. You can even begin wearing makeup again after one day. Expect some redness after the treatment.
After your initial treatment, you should start seeing results within 5-7 days. Experts recommend doing three to four treatments to see optimal results.
As we enter the ideal season for laser treatments, it's important to note that many laser procedures require post-treatment sun avoidance. Fortunately, during the autumn and winter months, the intensity of the sun's harmful UV rays is reduced. This creates an opportune window for you to consider undergoing a laser treatment like the Moxi.
Combining the treatment
Moxi works wonders on its own, but when combined with other treatments, the results can be unmatched. One of Trilogy's favorite combinations to help reduce even more signs of sun damage is the Moxi + BBL treatment. The BBL (IPL) treatment is the next generation of phototherapy that aims to improve pigment, redness, and overall skin quality anywhere on the body, including visible signs of aging, sun damage, acne, and more. When combined Moxi and BBL can produce amazing results for pigmentation correction.
