SANDY — RSL needed more Wednesday night at home in a 3-1 loss to FC Dallas.

Both sides had a slow start to the game, but that changed when RSL's Christian Arango scored a header from the center of the box to the bottom left corner of the goal in the 42nd minute.

The first half closed with the home team up 1-0 on FC Dallas, and RSL appeared to be in the driver's seat to earning a vital 3 points in its pursuit of a coveted playoff spot with only five games left in the season.

"1-0 is more than enough to win a game," RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni said. "And then you need to commit to work."

But that extra work is where RSL lacked Wednesday night.

The home team gave up three goals in the second half — a shot in front of the goal by Paul Arriola in the 56th minute, followed by a penalty kick goal by Jesus Ferreira in the 62nd minute and a final goal in the 70th minute by Ferreira again in the center of the box — and squandered away any first-half momentum the team had.

There seemed to be a moment of hope for RSL as Jefferson Savarino appeared to have a through ball late in the game, but Anderson Julio was caught offside and negated the goal.

"What we need at this moment is guys to step up and guys to really show the character, and guys who really put the team on their back," Mastroeni said.

RSL welcomes Vancouver at America First Field Saturday (7:30 p.m. MDT), with hopes of earning 3 points in one of the last home games of the season.
