Cookies may be the ultimate treat for a night in. Quicker and easier to bake than most desserts but with just as much decadence, they're the perfect treat for a cozy night at home with your partner or family.
Whether you're a true cookie monster or an occasional taster, here are nine incredible cookies you can make for your next movie night. And don't forget the best part of movie night—curling up in your cozy Minky Couture blanket.
Chocolate chip cookies
When made well, you simply can't go wrong with a classic chocolate chip cookie. In fact, according to data from Nestle Toll House shared by Brit + Co, chocolate chip cookies are Utah's favorite cookie — along with a good chunk of the country.
Dig into the family archives for your mom's secret recipe, or try this one from the New York Times that uses super-dark chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt on each cookie.
Jam thumbprint cookies
An oldie but a goodie, you might remember baking these with your mom or grandma as a kid. According to Redbook, these cookies originate from Europe in the 19th century, though it's uncertain where exactly. The classic flavors of shortbread and jam still hold up all these years. These tender, buttery cookies are a nostalgic favorite and great for any time of the year. Try Averie Cooks' version of the classic thumbprint.
S'more bars
Different s'mores variations have been going viral this summer, but this version removes all need for a campfire by making the outdoorsy treat into a cookie bar. One reviewer of Pinch of Yum's S'mores Bars recipe said, "5 stars. One of the best things I've ever eaten. I made them for Father's Day and everyone went crazy for them!"
Macarons
Airy, crunchy, and creamy—French macarons take more time and expertise than a typical cookie but are always worth the effort. Beware that they may take a few tries to perfect. The Food Network has a step-by-step guide (including a video tutorial) on how to make these tricky yet tasty cookies. If all else fails, word on the street is that Trader Joe's has delicious macarons in their frozen section that are as good as homemade.
Almost Swig sugar cookie
Another local Utah favorite cookie is Swig's classic pink sugar cookie. A Bountiful Kitchen's "Almost Swig" Sugar Cookie recipe comes as close as you can to the real thing, nailing the thick sugar cookie base and perfectly sweet frosting.
Si Foster of A Bountiful Kitchen says the trick for these cookies comes from scooping the dough instead of rolling it out and cutting out the circles.
Monster cookies
When you're monstrously hungry, the cookie for the job is going to be a monster cookie. These heavy treats are loaded with oatmeal, peanut butter, and M&Ms which make them filling and rich. They come together quickly, too, so you don't have to waste any time getting your movie night started. You can try this recipe from Pretty Simple Sweet blog.
Oreo crinkles
Picture your childhood bake sale favorite—the chocolate crinkle—but add oreos. The delectable chocolate cookie rolled in powdered sugar that you remember from your childhood gets a makeover with the addition of crushed oreos and white chocolate chips. You'll never go back to regular crinkles. Try this recipe from Cookies for Days.
Snickerdoodles
The classic snickerdoodle can't be left out of the conversation. You might prefer them small and puffy or large and chewy, but either way they're always a hit. There are hundreds of variations online but this one from Mom On Time Out is a perfect one if you're craving soft and chewy. Be prepared to eat more than one or two!
Gluten-free peanut butter cookies
Just because you're looking for something without gluten doesn't mean you need to sacrifice flavor and texture! If you still want the richness of a regular cookie, peanut butter is the way to go. The peanut butter holds the gluten-free flour together and makes it taste indistinguishable from a cookie made with regular flour. Try this version from Gluten Free Baking.
