WEST JORDAN — The only gripe Bingham fans could have about Friday's 48-0 demolition of West Jordan is that the Miners took too long to score its first touchdown.

Quarterback Dallen Martinez found receivers in the end zone on back-to-back plays on his first drive, but both passes were dropped, which forced the Miners to wait until there was 2:59 left in the first quarter to get on the scoreboard.

But once they did, it was full speed ahead.

Martinez got his fair share of highlight plays on the night — including a stunning 20-yard, back-corner touchdown pass to Hunter Mehn to go up 28-0 in the final seconds of the first half — but it was the run game that carried the load for the Miners Friday.

Running back Carson Sudbury broke off a big run that set him up for the first touchdown of the night late in the first quarter; and Havea Fotu scored three times, including a 9-yard catch to go up 14-0 early in the second quarter.

"He's undersized, but he plays like a monster," head coach Eric Jones said of Fotu. "He's tough, he's humble; he's just a great kid to have on our side — love rooting for him."

The Miners opened the second half with two touchdowns just 34 seconds apart after Fotu ran in his third score and Kisina Afemui returned a fumble 25 yards to go up 41-0 with 8:15 left in the third quarter.

"West Jordan is really banged up right now, a lot of injuries at some key positions, (and) I know that had a factor in our defensive performance tonight," Jones said. "But that aside, the kids executed what we gave them as far as a game plan really, really well."

Bingham was able to put in a lot of its backups in the fourth quarter, and junior T.J. Brimhall broke off a couple of nice runs to get the Miners up to 48 points on the night.

The Miners take on Riverton next week to close out region play, and West Jordan welcomes Copper Hills to Jaguar Stadium.

"They've got our number and they let us know about it frequently," Jones said of not beating Riverton since 2019. "So yeah, we're really excited to get to that game and compete against a really good football team."
