SALT LAKE CITY — A lengthy weather delay gave the Little Leaguers from Utah a few extra hours in the World Series tournament on Sunday.
But, in the end, the kids from Santa Clara's time in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, came to an end with a 10-2 loss to the Midwest team from Iowa in an elimination game.
The Iowa duo of Ted Swanson and Mason McFate combined for six hits and five RBIs to lead the Midwest team in the win.
But Utah had its chances, too. Snow Canyon's Colton Gainey was 2 of 2 and reached base on all three plate appearances, Kolby Lamoreaux was 2 of 3 with an RBI and Cody Ruffell was 2 of 3 and scored a run.
Behind those three, Utah was on the verge of big innings in both the second and third. The team loaded the bases in both innings but were unable to do any more damage than a single run in each.
In the second inning, Iowa got out of the jam when Lamoreaux was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a long fly ball. Iowa then followed it up with a five-run inning to give the Midwest team a 9-1 lead.
Utah had six hits on Sunday to Iowa's 11.
Before the sixth inning, and Iowa leading 9-2, the threat of weather stopped the game for nearly four hours before play could resume.
Regardless of the result, though, the Snow Canyon All-Stars etched their name in Little League history and brought together a community and state in the process.
Snow Canyon was the first-ever Utah Little League team to make it to Williamsport.
After arriving in Pennsylvania, the team had to play amid tragic circumstances after 12-year-old Easton Oliverson fell from a bunk bed in the team dorm and fractured his skull. Their story became a national tale and grabbed the attention of MLB stars Mookie Bettes and Mike Trout, who both sent messages of support to the club.
