SALT LAKE CITY – Elder Dale G. Renlund and Sister Ruth L. Renlund have tested positive for COVID-19, according to church officials.
Elder Renlund has only mild symptoms and Sister Renlund is asymptomatic, church spokesman Eric Hawkins said Saturday; their conditions are being monitored.
Other church leaders are being tested as a precaution after this potential exposure, Hawkins said. Elder and Sister Renlund have been "carefully following recommended public health practices," he said.
The church "is following all appropriate health protocols for contact tracing and will continue to follow health guidelines for this virus," for the protection of church leaders and the community, Hawkins wrote in a statement. "We continue to encourage all to take steps to protect themselves and one another during this pandemic, including wearing masks, frequently washing hands, and social distancing."
Elder Renlund was named to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in October 2015; before then he was a professor of medicine at the University of Utah, and was the medical director of the Utah Transplantation Affiliated Hospitals (UTAH) Cardiac Transplant Program.
